This page explains, in plain language, where the information in BuyCanadianFirst listings comes from, how listings can exist before a business claims them, and what BCF does and does not confirm. It works alongside our Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy — it doesn’t replace either.

Where listing information comes from

BuyCanadianFirst listings can begin from more than one place. Here’s where listing information currently comes from.

Public and government open-data sources

Some listings begin with information from public and government open-data sources, including municipal business records.

Business representatives

When an authorized representative claims a listing, they can manage certain permitted information directly, such as a description, hours, and contact details.

Corrections and updates

Anyone — a business representative or a visitor — can submit a correction request when listing information looks outdated or incorrect.

Registry information

Where available, BCF may separately maintain registration-related information for a business. This is kept distinct from other listing details and does not, on its own, establish other business attributes.

Source-supported unclaimed listings

A Basic listing can exist on BuyCanadianFirst before the business claims it, as long as the underlying record is supported by an approved source. A confirmed website, phone number, or email address is not required for a listing to exist in this form.

An unclaimed listing describes management status only — it does not, by itself, say anything about ownership, registration, or where a business’s products come from. The presence or absence of contact information does not establish or rule out any of these either.

Owner-managed information

Once BCF approves a claim, the approved representative can manage certain permitted information on that listing — such as its description, hours, and contact details.

Owner-managed information is kept separate from the evidence and trust information BCF controls (see the next section). Claim approval establishes only that BCF has recognized a claimant’s relationship to the business and their authority to manage the listing — nothing more.

How BCF treats evidence and provenance

Where source context is available, BCF maintains information about the source supporting a listing. Some of that source and review information is kept internal rather than shown publicly — this is intentional, and it’s covered in our Privacy Policy.

A listing being source-supported does not mean BCF has independently verified it. And where registry information is present on a listing, it supports registration-related facts specifically — it is not evidence of anything beyond that.

Keeping Canadian attributes separate

BCF treats the following as five separate ideas, never as stand-ins for one another:

  • Canadian location — the business is located in Canada.
  • Canadian registration — information supports a Canadian registration for the business.
  • Canadian ownership — information supports Canadian ownership of the business.
  • Made in Canada — information supports a product being made in Canada.
  • Manufactures in Canada — information supports manufacturing taking place in Canada.

One of these does not establish another. A business located in Canada is not necessarily Canadian-registered or Canadian-owned. A registered business is not necessarily Canadian-owned or manufacturing in Canada. A Made in Canada product does not mean the business itself is Canadian-owned. These distinctions apply across BuyCanadianFirst, though not every listing currently shows every one of them.

Corrections and updates

Business information changes over time, and BCF relies on business representatives and visitors to help keep it current. If something on a listing needs review, you can submit a correction request.

Correction requests are reviewed before any change is made — submitting one does not automatically overwrite BCF-controlled information.

Limitations

  • Source information can be incomplete, outdated, or subject to change.
  • The absence of a fact or document does not prove the opposite is true.
  • BCF is not a government registry, certification authority, or accreditation body.
  • A listing’s presence, or the presence of source information, is not an endorsement.
  • Where a decision depends on formal confirmation, consult the relevant authoritative source directly.
